Web Site author's assessment of SIrius xm's FINANCIAL standings
To date, Sirius XM has over 18,000,000 subscribers across 4 different platforms (Satellite Radio, Smartphone, Internet, XM Personal Radio). The company has a primarily free service showing that they don't want to slow down the adoption of satellite radio, offering new services in navigation, video, and advertising to gain revenue that way as opposed to raising subscription prices to earn a profit. The greatest financial move for Sirius XM was the merger between Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio in July of 08' that combined customers of both companies together offering an even better radio experence with over 140 channels for an unbeatable price. Offering packages from selected channels for around $15 per month to an all access pass of all their programing for $200 a year. The options they offer customers is the biggest selling point of the product. Simply put, You can have what you want, when you want it, for however much you want to pay. The expense on Sirius XM's behalf is relatively low. On average, an XM satellite will cost around $30,000 to get licensed and launched and will last for up to ten years. They pay around $45,000 to artists in royalties which will last them around 9 years. The output cost for Sirius XM is extremely low compared to the annual income of this radio giant ($1.63 Billion). Bankruptcy threatened Sirius XM in February of 09' when their stock price dropped to an all time low of $0.05 per share. However, Sirius XM was able to stay afloat with help from media mogul John Malone with an emergency funding of $500,000,000 to the company. At the time, Malone had a 40% equity stake in the company. As of September 30, 2012, the company sports a current profit margin of 8.59%. The future of Sirius XM Satellite radio is unpredictable with competition growing in the internet radio market threatening to steal over half of Sirius XM's business. Sirius XM offers services over the internet and on mobile devices, the programing being far from that of other competitors. But as long as radios are installed into cars, and if Sirius XM can become a standard alongside AM/FM radio with becoming more involved at a local level, Satellite radio could be the ruler of all radio broadcasting.
